SUMMARY:Deadline: Restorative Justice in Legal Education Paper Proposal
DESCRIPTION:We are seeking proposals for papers on the topic of integrating restorative justice in law school curriculum and culture. The papers will be presented at a two-day symposium to be held from June 17-18\, 2024 at Vermont Law and Graduate School in Burlington\, Vermont. Following the convening\, accepted papers will be published in a themed issue of The Journal of Legal Education. \n\n\n\nThis symposium will bring together a small group (approximately 20) of scholars and educators to explore the prevalence and impact of restorative justice education in law schools. Presenters will also be asked to participate in one pre-symposium and one post-symposium session to be held on Zoom to foster community building and ongoing collaboration among participants. Reasonable travel expenses for the primary author to attend the symposium in June will be covered by the National Center on Restorative Justice. \n\n\n\nPlease read the full proposal document and submit all materials via this online form by March 1\, 2024. Authors will be notified of acceptance by March 15.

SUMMARY:Restorative Justice in Legal Education: A Virtual Symposium for Law Students
DESCRIPTION:The aim of this one-day\, virtual\, gathering is to explore the applicability of restorative justice content and practices in the law school context and what restorative approaches have to offer the field of legal education. The gathering will focus on the perspectives of law students. \n\n\n\nThe existing criminal legal system replenishes itself regularly with newly minted graduates and other professionals educated and trained in an adversarial model. This classical education teaches criminal justice leaders to use the law\, rules\, and procedures to maximize the strength of their own position\, while highlighting and exploiting the weaknesses of the adversary. Educating undergraduate\, graduate\, and law students in the adversarial model perpetuates the use of the adversarial model. \n\n\n\nBringing restorative justice to the law school context interrupts this cycle and equips the next generation of criminal justice professionals to bring the restorative justice approach to bear in reforming the current system. \n\n\n\nThis event offers law students\, aspiring law students\, and recent graduates from any law school in the United States the opportunity to learn more about restorative justice and actively explore how to bring it into law school classrooms and communities as a community. Attending the event requires no previous knowledge of restorative justice\, and it is free of charge\, although advanced registration is necessary.

DESCRIPTION:“What is restorative justice?” This is an important question that can be difficult to answer. If we want restorative justice to take root in the criminal justice system and beyond\, it is essential that we find creative and concise ways to communicate restorative justice to the public. In recognition of this need and in honor of International Restorative Justice week\, the National Center on Restorative Justice (NCORJ) invites you to submit a 3-minute video that answers the question “What is restorative justice?” \n\n\n\nFeel free to take a creative approach and integrate art\, poetry\, symbolism\, metaphors\, or anything that sparks your imagination that you think would help to achieve a broader understanding of the philosophy and practice of restorative justice. The sky is the limit (with a hard stop at 3-minutes)! \n\n\n\nDon’t feel that your video needs to be a final\, polished product. This invitation is open to anyone with any level of technological proficiency and prior videography experience. SUMMARY:Restorative Approaches to Policing Think Tank
DESCRIPTION:The National Center on Restorative Justice’s inaugural institute on the topic of restorative approaches to policing. Structured as a virtual “think tank\,” we invited restorative justice and policing experts from across the United States who use restorative approaches in policing in a variety of models to participate. These experts included police leaders\, restorative justice nonprofit partners\, and academics with a specialty in restorative approaches in policing. Participants identified the most pressing issues and questions nationally related to policing to help shape the following institute. From this inaugural institute\, we produced a restorative policing reference list that links research\, approach outlines\, and practical guides to assist in continuing knowledge and practice of restorative justice and policing work. \n\n\n\nView the reference list here. \n\n\n\n\n\n Additionally\, in the lead-up to the event\, representatives from each of the programs and police departments involved were asked to fill out a survey providing some basic information about their program or approach. This information was then distilled into the one-page descriptions of each program. \n\n\n\nView that report here.
