PEACEMAKER PROGRAM.
1) Purpose. The purpose of the Peacemaker Program is to provide a nonadversarial way to resolve disputes. Peacemaker conferences are intended to reflect the Tribe’s tradition of using respected members of the community to heal conflicts among its members.
2) Qualifications. A Peacemaker shall be at least twenty-five (25) years of age, a member of the Tribe, and known and respected in the community in which he or she lives. No Peacemaker shall serve if he or she has ever been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or violence within the last three (3) years.
3) Appointment. The Chief Judge shall compile a list of qualified applicants to serve as Peacemakers and shall present the list to Tribal Council for approval.
4) Volunteers. Peacemakers shall be volunteers and shall not be compensated for their time, but may be reimbursed for mileage at the Tribal mileage reimbursement rate.
5) Administration. The Court shall be responsible for establishing policies and procedures, training programs, and Program evaluations.
6) Representation. No party to a Peacemaking conference may be represented by counsel. A party may only by represented by a spokesperson to the extent necessary for the party to understand the nature of the proceedings.
